Some of you may already know, but this is my 22^nd year in business. I won’t go into the detailed history here, but suffice it to say, it’s been quite a ride.

You see, I’m someone that can’t ever do something half way. I always end up right in the middle of the fray. It’s all or nothing.

Joining the American Specialty Toy Retailer Association or ASTRA, was a no brainer. Serving two years on the board of directors and four years heading the national convention, well, it just fit the way I do things.

My newest involvement is with the Good Toy Group. I’ve started my 2^nd year on the board and boy, what an education! This is the group that plans and implements our outstanding toy catalogs. The company is set up so that when you become a member, you actually take part ownership. Perfect fit!

This year I have volunteered to be part of the Product Selection Committee.

So fast forward to this week…I’m here in New York City for my 15th International Toy Fair. This morning they asked me to coordinate our “plan of attack.” You have to try to visualize the enormity of the task. We’re talking miles and miles and hundreds of thousands of toys to sort and sift through to get to the 100 or so that we deem the cream of the crop. It’s truly stimulus overload.

So stay tuned and look for the Facebook posts throughout the next few days as I post pictures of new and wonderful “finds.” I’ll be looking for your thoughts and input. You see, always in the back of my head is the question, “What is my wonderful customer looking for?” It is ultimately for you.

The perfect Valentine's Day gift for your child

To parents, Valentine's Day has an extra special meaning. While husband and wife can celebrate the Hallmark holiday together with a nice meal and exchanging of gifts, it's also an opportunity to give gifts to those special youngsters in your life to show how much you love them as well.

Traditionally, kids have received the same type of gifts on Valentine's Day; plush stuffed animals being one of the most popular. And while cute plush can be a big hit with the kiddos, we'd like to offer you something different. Not only will both parents and children love it, it's extremely powerful in the development of the parent-child relationship.

It's called the "I Like Book."

This handy book is designed so each child has their own. It's okay NOT to share this time! Daily, weekly or when ever the thought comes, parents write things they "like" about the child. It's easy to do and it's super effective in communicating to the children just how special and loved they are.

"Parenting is hard. This little book helps us as parents remember why we had children in the first place," said Terry Myers, owner of Kaleidoscope Toys.

We highly recommend this book for Valentine's and for any other day when you might give your child a gift "just because."

First Annual Lego Building Contest coming to an end

Last day of January. Just a few days before the big Super Bowl. While the big contest that concludes the NFL season is fast approaching, we have our own big contest wrapping up this week as well. If you've been by the store, you know what we're talking about - the Lego Building Contest.

For the last few weeks we've had numerous submissions in our contest. This week we expect a late rush of submissions as well. If you're deciding to enter now, you can get a look at your competition by checking out our Facebook page to see those who have submitted so far. (http://www.facebook.com/kaleidoscopetoys)

The contest is pretty straightforward.

RULES
1) Your Lego project needs to be put on display in the Kaleidoscope Toys window with a name and age card sometime between January 7 - February 4. Obviously, the longer in the window, the more votes you may get from the general public.

2) Friends, family, your postman and anyone else may vote for their favorite creation from each category. Votes will be received via facebook post to the Kaleidoscope Toys wall at www.facebook.com/kaleidoscope toys or in the store. However, only one vote per category per person per day. No stuffing the ballot box!

3) Votes received will help the judges determine the winners but will not be the only determining factor in choosing the winners. Why? Because while we want the excitement that "stumping for votes" will generate for the kids, we don't want this to be a popularity contest. Just because you are related to every one in the county does not make you the winner, though it does make finding a job easier. (Information on how to vote is below)

4) If an 8-year-old child is competing in the 8-year-old category, the child should put their creation together without help from anyone else. (Sorry mom & dad) Hey, we do have an adult category for you. And no fair getting your child to help you either.

5) Creations can be a set built according to directions or creative use of loose bricks to make an original structure.

6) When you bring in your entry, you are giving Kaleidoscope Toys the right to post your image on facebook and other store promotional material.

7) All Lego creations will be released to their creators after the judging has taken place and the winners have been announced.

8) Maximum size of entry is 18" x 18".

9) Employees and relatives of employees are not eligible to participate.

- Ages 10 to 14
- Ages 15 to adult

PRIZES
There will be a first place, second place and a third place for each of the age groups. First place will win a $25 gift certificate. Second place will win a $20 gift certificate. Third place will win a $15 gift certificate. All other entries will receive an "honorable mention" award and a $5 gift certificate.

We will taking entries on Saturday, January 7th thru February 4th. Voting will continue through Feb 4th. We will announce the winners on February 5th.

VOTING
1) Ballots will be available at the store
2) Online at the Kaleidoscope Toys facebook page at www.facebook.com/kaleidoscopetoys. We will post a picture of your entry on our facebook page. A post or a "like" on your entry's picture counts as a vote.
3) Limit one vote per person, per day, per category.

- Votes by email or phone calls will not accepted...Really. (It may also help to "check in" on your facebook account while you're here to remind your friends to vote for your creation.)

- Certainly the votes people receive will be considered, but final judging will be purely arbitrary based on criteria that may vary with the mood of the judges. Remember, it's all in fun, something to keep us all busy with a project in the dead of winter.

A great New Year's resolution

January. It's a new start. It's the time of the year that many of us make resolutions to either a) give up something, or b) start doing something that we feel will make us better. We're going to focus on the latter.

We see it each January, year after year, and it falls directly in line with one of the more commonly suggested resolutions — I will spend more time with the kids this year.

January is really the perfect time to not only suggest you will spend more time with the kiddos, but actually do it. After the Christmas holidays we all return to our "normal" routines of back to school, and for many of us, back to work. We could all afford to open up a window of time in our day for the kids. Whether it's after school, after dinner, before bed, or some other time that is better suited for your schedule, it's really important to make an effort to spend some quality time bonding with your children.

In addition to January being the perfect time to start anew and add a new routine into the mix, in all likelihood, you also have some new things from Christmas including games, puzzles, arts and crafts, or some other type of projects. All of these are great opportunities to spend time with you children and enjoy their company, even for those who might be older and otherwise wouldn't want to just spend time hanging out with you.

Just remember, spending time with the kids comes from the heart. It's not out of obligation. One day not too far down the road, you'll look back and wonder where the time went. You'll be thankful for the time you had with your kids and cling to all those great memories you made. And hopefully, you'll say, "When 2012 started, I remember when we did this..."

Hard to believe but another year has come and gone. And boy what a year it has been.

While this last month was, as you would expect for a toy store, quite crazy, this year has been great overall as we've seen a steady stream of new customers come in and find out about our little place of happiness. We were so happy to meet so many great new people looking for a variety of products, and we were equally thrilled to see so many from our loyal customer base pay us visits throughout the year as well.

When we reflect back on the year that was 2011, regardless of whether you're a new or existing customer, we just want to tell each and every one of you how much we appreciate your business and how excited we are looking forward to a great 2012. We hope you and your family have a safe and fun New Year's Eve and a healthy and blessed 2012.

Shopping local – why it's good for everyone

This time of year we know many consumers decide to go online looking for the best deal. We understand. Times have been difficult and every extra penny helps.

While we appreciate getting a good deal as much as the next guy, we also understand that it's the local economies around this nation that allow the nation's economy to sustain as a whole. As a local business, we are solely dependent on our local customer to come to us for their toy needs and sustain us as a business. Fortunately, local customers have done just that for 22 years now and we are so grateful for having had the opportunity to serve you.

What is the alternative? If you don't shop local (Target, Wal-Mart don't count), those dollars go elsewhere – namely big retailers and places outside of the local area, and in some cases, out of the U.S. altogether.

We ask that when you are considering that next purchase, you pause for a moment and really think about what local business might have that product you need or want. And when making that buying decision, please also be sure and consider not only the product and its costs, but also weigh in the fact that when you buy local, you're doing something positive for your local community.

Remember these numbers too — For every $100 spent at a locally-owned business, $68 stays in the local economy through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures. Compare that to only $43 if you spend at a national chain. With online purchases, ZERO dollars stay local.

If you'd like more information on buying local, there's a great resource called the 3/50 Project. This organization's motto is simple, "Saving the Brick and Mortars Our Nation Is Built On." Notice how it says "is" built on, not was. We need to continue that trend going forward. Thanks for supporting your local businesses!

What is the "hot toy" this year?

We hear this question a lot, but especially during this time of the year as Christmas approaches. When asked this question, we see it as an opportunity—an opportunity to explain the whole “hot toy” phenomenon and what it really means to you, the consumer.

The “hot toy” by its very nature is not necessarily the best toy. It’s the most popular toy at the time, and that means one thing—marketing. In most cases, it has a large marketing budget behind it that allows promotion on TV, radio, newspaper, and the Internet.

It’s easy to go back through the years and think of hot toys—Cabbage Patch, Beanie Babies, Tickle Me Elmo, Zhu Zhu pets and more. I admit, these are all entertaining toys. However, none of them rank high on the play-value scale, which is our guide for recommending toys throughout the year including the Christmas season.

What is the play-value scale?

The play-value scale is actually quite simple and consists of three questions.

1)    Will the child play with the toy well after Christmas?
2)    Will the child outgrow the toy too fast?
3)    Will the child learn from the toy without really knowing that he/she is actually learning?

Questions 1 and 2 appear to be similar. They are indeed different. At Christmas, most children get multiple toys. There’s a time period where they play with all their toys. If a child is likely to play with a specific toy over all the other toys after the initial “play” period is over, then that toy is given a higher play value.

For question 2, we’re trying to determine if the toy will entertain for more than just a few months such as the Flying Turtle. In this case, a child "sit-skates", zipping along any hard, smooth surface by swinging the handlebars from side to side. Since it holds up to 225 lbs, even adults can ride it and they get a good physical workout, too.

Lastly, if a toy is educational in nature and provides some type of learning while also entertaining without the child realizing it, then the toy receives a high play value.

All three of these components are important in determining play value of a toy and can vary, depending on the toy. We encourage all of our consumers to think about the play-value scale during any toy-buying experience and it will likely result in a child that is content with a toy for a longer period of time.

What's the "Hot" Toy?

What’s the Hot Toy this Holiday Season?

During the holidays, “Hot Toy” lists are everywhere. You’ll find them on TV, radio, online, in newspapers and magazines; virtually anywhere you can imagine. But what really is a Hot Toy? Is it what TV or radio tells us it is? If we read it online or in the newspaper does that make it a Hot Toy? If a toy manufacturer tells us they have the Hot Toy for the season, is it really?

To answer these questions, we first need to realize that high priced advertising and marketing campaigns are fueling these messages. They are designed to create hype and excitement with the hopes of making their toy this year’s Hot Toy. But what about play value? What about creativity and imagination? Quality? Developmental appropriateness for your child?

We at Kaleidoscope Toys have a different definition for Hot Toy. For us, it’s the one YOUR child will be playing with long after the holiday is over. You see, we understand that a child’s job is to play. It’s how they learn. So to us, Hot Toys are toys that provide fun, open-ended, creative, rewarding play experiences. Toys that spark the imagination make kids think and well, get them involved in their play. In other words, the child does all the doing and thinking, not the toy.

As I was planning my March events for the store, I received an intriguing email from one of my customers; 8 year old Ella Salerno. She and her family have been regular customers of Kaleidoscope Toys for some years now. She said she was raising money ($5000 - on her own!) - for Charity: Water and was asking for a donation. On top of that, to show how determined she was, she was giving up her birthday presents this year and asking party goers to make an $8.00 donation instead!
